FIFA Communications & Public Affairs Division 9 FIFA Club World Cup 2015

The next edition of the FIFA Club World Cup will be held in Japan.

To date, three Brazilian clubs (Corinthians in 2000 & 2012, So Paulo FC in 2005, and Sport Club International in 2006), two Italian clubs (AC Milan in 2007 and FC Internazionale in 2010), two Spanish clubs (FC Barcelona in 2009, 2011 and 2015, and Real Madrid in 2014), one English club (Manchester United in 2008), and one German club (Bayern Mnchen in 2013) have won the FIFA Club World Cup.

FC Barcelona (ESP) is the only club to have won the tournament three times.

So far, 55 different teams have participated in the FIFA Club World Cup. Only Auckland City FC (NZL) has competed in seven editions of this tournament,

Auckland City FC have played 13 matches, the most matches in this event.

Daniel Koprivcic (NZL) is the only player to have played in six editions of the FIFA Club World Cup. The midfielder saw action in 2007 and 2008 with Waitakere United, and featured in four tournaments with Auckland City in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Filippo Inzaghi (ITA) and Lionel Messi (ARG) and Luios Suarez (URU) are the only players who have scored a brace in a FIFA Club World Cup final match. In 2007 Inzaghi scored two goals for AC Milan (ITA) against Boca Juniors (ARG). Messis two goals were for FC Barcelona (ESP) in the 2011 final against Santos FC (BRA), and Suarez two goals also for FC Barcelona (ESP) in the final against River Plate (ARG) in 2015.

Lionel Messi (ARG) has scored the most final match goals; one in the 2009 final against Estudiantes La Plata (ARG), two in the 2011 final against Santos FC (BRA), and one in the final against River Plate (ARG) in 2015.

Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona and Clube Atltico Mineiro), Dwight Yorke (Manchester United and Sydney FC), and Neri Cardozo (Boca Juniors and Monterrey) are the only players to have scored for more than one team in the competition.

Topping the overall list of goalscorers with five goals are Argentinian players Csar Delgado (2012, 2013), and

Lionel Messi (2009, 2011, 2015), and Luis Suarez from Uruguay (2015).

The next match to be played will be the 100th game in history of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The 2013 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup went down in history with the highest goal average of 3.5 (28 goals in 8 matches).

The adidas Golden Boot was presented once in 2000 and has not been awarded since. The adidas Golden Ball and the FIFA Fair Play Award, however, have been presented since the tournaments inception in 2000.

Five consecutive finals between 2005 and 2009 and again between 2011 and 2015 were all between teams from South America and Europe, only in 2010 when TP Mazembe Englebert (COD) played FC Internazionale (ITA), did a African team reach the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.

With six different clubs, Brazil and Mexico have had the most number of participating teams.

FIFA Club World Cup 2015 Winners Trophy

Designer Thomas Fattorini Ltd, Birmingham, UK Jane Powell (lead), Dawn Forbes

Manufacturer Thomas Fattorini Ltd, Birmingham, UK

Description The design shows six staggered pillars, representing the six participating teams from the respective six Confederations, and one separate metal structure referencing the winner of the competition. They hold up a globe in the shape of a football a consistent feature amongst almost all of FIFAs event trophies. The graceful curves and inherent strength of the trophy evoke the balletic and athletic qualities necessary to successfully compete in the FIFA Club World Cup and the tension and movement describe the competitive energy amongst the participants.

Material Brass, copper, sterling silver; gilding metal, aluminium, chrome and rhodium; gold plated

Intercontinental and Toyota Cup Between 1960 and 1968, the Intercontinental Cup was a competition endorsed by UEFA and CONMEBOL and contested between the winners of the European Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores. The system of play was a home-and-away series, decided by points only (the same format used by CONMEBOL to determine the winner of the Copa Libertadores final until 1987). Because of this format, a third match was needed when both teams were tied on points.

From 1969 to 1979, the Intercontinental Cup continued as a two-leg competition between the UEFA and the CONMEBOL club champions. However, it adopted the European standard method to decide the winner by adding the goals of both matches to the aggregate score.

As of 1980 and until 2004, the competition was held as a single match in Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan. It was called the Toyota Cup, named after its sponsor.

FIFA Club World Cup The first FIFA Club World Cup was held in 2000 in Brazil with the participation of the club champions of all six confederations (AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA). In addition to those six teams, two additional competitors were invited: Real Madrid from Spain as the Toyota Cup winner of 1998 and the Brazilian host team, Corinthians, who went on to win the trophy.

In 2005 the Toyota Cup merged with the FIFA Club World Cup. This competition has since been played under the auspices of FIFA and between the club champions from the six Confederations (UEFAs and CONMEBOLs representative entering the competition in the semi-finals).

As from 2007 the hosts top team has also participated. In 2007, as a Japanese team won the AFC Champions League, the highest placed non-Japanese team of the AFC Champions League had a play-off for the quarter-finals with the OFC representative.

After four consecutive years of Japans hosting of the FIFA Club World Cup the competition was awarded to the United Arab Emirates for two years before returning to Japan for another two editions. In 2013 and 2014 host nation Morocco provided a superb setting for the tournament, with good-sized crowds at all the matches and a magnificent atmosphere throughout. The following FIFA Club World Cup was held in Japan between 10 and 20 December 2015 and Japan will also be the host for the 2016 edition.
